Observation-based selection of climate models projects Arctic ice-free summers around 2035

چکیده

Abstract Arctic sea ice has been retreating at an accelerating pace over the past decades. Model projections show that Ocean could be almost free in summer by middle of this century. However, uncertainties related to these are relatively large. Here we use 33 global climate models from Coupled Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6) and select best capture observed sea-ice area volume northward ocean heat transport refine model ice. This selection leads lower relative multi-model mean without ice-free conditions occur as early around 2035. These results highlight a potential underestimation future loss when including all CMIP6 models.

Evidence for ice-free summers in the late Miocene central Arctic Ocean

Although the permanently to seasonally ice-covered Arctic Ocean is a unique and sensitive component in the Earth's climate system, the knowledge of its long-term climate history remains very limited due to the restricted number of pre-Quaternary sedimentary records. During Polarstern Expedition PS87/2014, we discovered multiple submarine landslides along Lomonosov Ridge. Removal of younger sedi...

Observed anomalous atmospheric patterns in summers of unusual Arctic sea ice melt

The Arctic sea ice retreat has accelerated over the last decade. The negative trend is largest in summer, but substantial interannual variability still remains. Here we explore observed atmospheric conditions and feedback mechanisms during summer months of anomalous sea ice melt in the Arctic. Compositing months of anomalous low and high sea ice melt over 1979–2013, we find distinct patterns in...

Reducing spread in climate model projections of a September ice-free Arctic.

This paper addresses the specter of a September ice-free Arctic in the 21st century using newly available simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). We find that large spread in the projected timing of the September ice-free Arctic in 30 CMIP5 models is associated at least as much with different atmospheric model components as with initial conditions. Here we re...

Microphysical Parameterization of Arctic Diamond Dust, Ice Fog, and Thin Stratus for Climate Models

A parameterization is described for low-level clouds that are characteristic of the Arctic during winter. This parameterization simulates the activation of aerosols, the aggregation/coalescence, and the gravitational deposition of ice crystals/water droplets and the deposition/condensation of water vapor onto ice crystals/water droplets. The microphysics scheme uses four prognostic variables to...

Observation-based Blended Projections from Ensembles of Regional Climate Models

We consider the problem of projecting future climate from ensembles of regional climate model (RCM) simulations using results from the North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program (NARCCAP). To this end, we develop a hierarchical Bayesian space-time model that quantifies the discrepancies between different members of an ensemble of RCMs corresponding to present day conditions, and ...
